type='text'>basement EP review!

basement EP review!
Young Coyotes’ March 2009 EP, Basement, was so named because it was recorded in the band’s basement. Pesonally having been born less than five miles from emo-superstar Conor Oberst’s childhood home and never before having heard Young Coyotes’ music, I was worried Basement was going to be a lo-fi, whiney, sadness-release. It’s hard for me to imagine being more wrong.
The EP focuses on rhythm and vocals – think the dynamic and rhythmic qualities of Animal Collective with some Shins-style vocals thrown in for good measure. The first two tracks on the album – “Momentary Drowning” and “When I was in the Fire” – make the best use of these focuses. Both songs are centered around warm, melodic chants. The chants provide more than just background noise and structure for the tracks. They cleverly play off of lead singer Zach Tipton’s vocals in a way which enhances both. Further, the chants fade in and out to highlight the rise and fall of each song.
Besides the rhythms created by the chants is rhythm generated by the heavy percussion component. The drums – which fade in and out to great effect, much like the background chants – are as important to each song as the vocals. With guitar being the only other instrument regularly appearing on the EP (bells make an occasional appearance), the drums provide necessary support to the vocals. Much like in a classical string quartet, where each aspect of the small ensemble is vital to success, the percussion provides a driving force which would be otherwise lacking.
Structurally, Basement is fairly standard pop. However, the focus on heavy drum beats and clever hooks put it on a different level. Only 17 minutes in length, Basement is a solid, interesting, and fun EP – particularly for Young Coyotes’ first release. The EP makes me excited to hear more Young Coyotes’ material and look forward to a time when this young band breaks out of the Denver music scene, onto the national stage.

http://minesblog.com/music/2009/03/18/young-coyotes-week-basement-review/

first exhale EP review!

Young Coyotes decided to start off their career of recorded music with two EP’s, Exhale and Basement, released on March 10, 2009. Exhale consists of 5 freshly recorded tracks, while Basement (which will be reviewed on this blog tomorrow) is a compilation of the group’s previously released songs.
Exhale starts off with a strange guitar chord and an unusual drum beat. The distant vocals come in slowly. Listening to it seems to be nothing special. What could possibly come out of such a beat down beginning? Unknown to the listener though is that the song’s winding melody floats over the repetitious chord and simple drum beat, building, gaining strength, building tension until the vocals are calling out “What is this love in my house/It surely can’t be real.” At this point, the listener suddenly becomes aware that every bit of the song is still in his head. The airy “ooh”s become intimately familiar. The oscillating structure carries out the song in perfect fashion to the finish. And that’s just the first track.
The fast-paced songs continue through the rest of Exhale. The music remains subtle with repetitious chords and rare guitar riffs. Since the band only has a drum set and one guitar, the simple music technique lends itself to a vocal driven sound. The vocals themselves aren’t the smoothest around, but they certainly are catchy. Living up to their name, howls are found in every corner of the 20-minute EP, winding through the falsetto range. The melodies led through the vocals twist in ways unforgettable. Every song has the potential to be stuck in your head for weeks.
The skill this Denver duo brings to the recording studio on their first effort is unparalleled in structure, vocals, and lyrics by many of the more established bands of the same indie genre. This EP, Exhale, and its twin, Basement, are both available for purchase online via iTunes and AmazonMP3.

http://minesblog.com/music/2009/03/17/yc-week-exhale-review/<div all the artists that have recorded there. we were slightly jealous.

we picked out our spots in the recording room and set up adam's drums, my guitar, and amp.
<br the former spouse in familia places, or if it is death, setting the table for the person or acting as if they are still in living there. No crying. Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss.

2-Anger-"why me?", feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with spouse of divorce, for death, anger at the deceased, blaming them for leaving.

3-Bargaining-bargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals with the spouse who is leaving, or attempting to make deals with God to stop or change the loss. Begging, wishing, praying for them to come back.

4-Depression-overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, self pity, mourning loss of person as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future. Feeling lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal.

5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that it takes two to make or break a marriage. Realization that the person is gone (in death) that it is not their fault, they didn't leave you on purpose.

i usually don't arrive at the last stage until i am at my destination.

sorry, rochester.

the two parter. petty theft and thanksgiving.

*tonight, because of the vast differences of the subjects i'd like to mention, i'm dividing this blog post into two.
**exaggeration is funny.
***i don't like cops.

petty theft.

before i tell a short, funny story, i would like to say that tampa is an interesting place. it's population of more than 380,000 residents enjoy the pleasures and (most likely) discourage the tropical climate. according to wikipedia, which is a highly regarded research tool, tampa is called the "lightning capital of the world." i recently read a subplot in a novel about a women who wrote an interview type book about people all over the world who had been struck by lightning. can someone please do that? for me?
anyways, here's what happened in tampa. the singer for a band i cannot mention (to avoid getting sued...again) was EXTREMELY intoxicated. adam knew the right thing to do was to drive her minivan to the hotel we were staying at (keep your head out of the gutter) and let her sober up until she could drive herself home. quinn gave us directions to a motel 6 that didn't exist. adam, the girl, and the girl's minivan, along with me and the cavalier, lost each other through endless turns and skipped stop signs. i found them surrounded by five cop cars. as it turns out, after asking for directions, a city worker on a bike stole the purse from the girl's lap in the middle of his talking and sped away. this abyss that we could not get ourselves out of turned out to be the "projects of tampa" and were told by officers how stupid we were to be there. the obviously sober girl started to yell and curse at the police which made an equally drunk, but more coherent adam seem like a stand up citizen by comparison. apparently, her purse and the items inside are being traded for crack and/or money for crack right about now and there's nothing we can do about it. we probably wouldn't anyways, considering tampa is full of sketchy characters. the night ended with the deafening cries of a twenty two year old bartender who asked me repeatedly repeatedly repeatedly where her camera was. (it was in her purse. go figure.) adam and i had to sleep in one of the beds while she was lucky enough to not be kicked out by me and continued to sob into the early morning hours in her own comfy cloud-like slumber. thank you drunk girl.

thanksgiving

i try not to be the cliche musician guy, but i can't help caring for others that truly need some help.

here are some things you should look more into this coming holiday season...starting with this:

www.consciousalliance.org

"It is our goal to collect and distribute one million pounds of food to America’s hungry both in cities and on impoverished American Indian Reservations. Once we reach that goal, we hope to collect and distribute one million pounds of food per year every year thereafter. We are confident we can reach our goal!"

and finally...i can't mention this enough...

www.freerice.com

The rice you donate makes a huge difference to the person who receives it. According to the United Nations, about 25,000 people die each day from hunger or hunger-related causes, most of them children. Though 20 grains of rice may seem like a small amount, it is important to remember that while you are playing, so are thousands of other people at the same time. It is everyone together that makes the difference. Thanks to you, FreeRice has generated enough rice to feed more than two million people since it started in October 2007. Increase your vocabulary and donate rice with each right answer. SIMPLE.

there are others, but they aren't appropriate for the food related posts. if you know of any others, feel free to put them in the comments section so other can see them. even if you have nothing, you can still give something. <---i want that copyrighted.

~zach
<img width='1' height='1' there are, however, some strange laws. here are a few:

If one is a parent to two illegitimate children, that person will go to jail for at least one month.

No one may bribe any athlete to “rig” a game, match, tournament, etc.

It is illegal to teach others what polygamy is.

A man may not seduce a woman by lying, and claiming he will marry her.

One may be fined up to $100 for using “profane language” in public places.

Private citizens may personally arrest any person that disturbs a church service.

Cattle rustling is punishable by hanging.

Horses are not to be housed within 50 feet of any road.

Adultery or Fornication (living togeather while not married or having sex with someone that is not your spouse) results in a fine of $500 and/or 6 months in prison.
<br and $10,000.

It is illegal for a male to be sexually aroused in public.

i'm really hoping i don't come in contact with a homeless (must be comfortable with near nudity)
Zach: gym shorts, no underwear, glasses.
Cops 1-3: uniforms that fit accordingly.

Props:

~keys
~suitcases
~a 2001 Chevy Cavalier

Setting:

Phoenix, AZ. Early morning hours. Sunny. Dumpy Motel 6.

knocking at the door. silence. louder knocking on the door.

Adam: (sleepy) Zach, wake up.
Zach: ugh...no.
Adam: Someone's at the door.
Zach: Fuck you.
LOUD knocking.
(Zach gets up slowly and answers the door. Cops 1-3 enter scene.)

Cop 1: Are you Mr. Tipton?
Zach: Um...yes.
Cop 1: Do you know why we're here today, Mr. Tipton?
Zach: No idea. Adam, have I done anything illegal in the past week?
Adam: Ha...I don't think so.
Cop 2: What did you pay with last night, Mr. Tipton?
Zach: (awake and alert now) Let's see...a fifty and a twenty. Yep. That sounds right.
Cop 1: Did you know that the fifty dollar bill you paid for was counterfeit?
Adam: Are you serious?!
Zach: What?! I had no idea. At all. We paid with the money we were given after the show.
Cop 3: Let us see the money you received then.
Zach: Okay, let me go get it.
(nervously rummages through his backpack)
Cop 2: Are you guys in a rock band or something?
Adam: Yeah, we're going to Las Cruces tomorrow.
Cop 3: What's the name of your band then?
Zach: Young Coyotes. The name of this band is Young Coyotes. (laughs)
Cop 1: This isn't funny.
Zach: No, you're right. It's not.
Cop 3: Do you realize how serious of a situation this is?
Zach: Yes, I do. I think it's a crazy situation though. Sorry.
Adam: (sleepily) I can't believe this.
Cop 2: Sir, put your hands behind your back.
Zach: Adam, quick! Get his gun!
Cop 3: Oh, shit! (Cop 3 gets out his gun but it fumbles in his hand. proceeds to kick it further away each time he bends down.)
Cop 1: Let me help you, Steve! (As Cop 1 bends to help Cop 3, they bump heads and both pass out. Coconut sound optional.)
Zach: Get your hands off of me, pig! (Zach does roundhouse kick to Cop 2's face)
Adam: Fuck you, Pig! (Adam proceeds to grab Cop 2 from the floor and drag him out of the motel room. Zach quickly grabs all of the suitcases in the room and kicks all three cops in various places while exiting. Adam punches Cop 2 in the face, knocking him out cold.)
Zach: Adam! The keys!
(Adam throws keys from second story)
Adam: Quick! Let's get the hell out of here!
Zach: Who's driving?
Adam: I don't know, you wanna drive?
Zach: Not really.
Adam: Let's flip for it.
Zach: Head or tails?
Cop 2: (weak) This is officer...need back...up...now.
Both (Adam and Zach): (Both look at each other) Ah!
(They get into the car and drive into the morning sunrise)

THE END.

DECEMBER 4TH. type='text'>Denver Syntax Magazine Write-Up!!!

It is axiomatic that the virtues we possess as children fade as we age. It is also axiomatic that those precious modes of living that we all possessed as kids are virtuous.

For centuries artists and thinkers alike have sought to unlearn what they’ve learned as adults in an attempt to relearn what they knew as children. And if you listen to the Young Coyotes, you will find a little bit of this present in their approach, their interactions and especially their sound.

The Young Coyotes sound like cavemen on acid. Er, not really. Actually, not even close. But engage them in conversation and, depending on the day, this is one answer you may hear. Said, of course, with a sly, childish laugh.

In all reality Adam Halferty (drums, vocals) and Zach Tipton (guitar, vocals) are a bit more serious about their music than some of their descriptions may lead you to believe. Building on the cavemen analogy, Tipton will describe their sound as being more tribal – mostly on account of the percussive elements that pervade their entire sound. From their diverse drum arrangements, to the xylophone and even Tipton’s guitar and vocals – the Coyotes have a heartbeat that is undeniable. And powerful.

These Coyotes will drop your jaw. Young or old. No other band in town right now has such a pronounced penchant and aptitude for employing so many movements, so eloquently, into one song. These Coyotes are wild but keep you guessing in the most charming and sophisticated of musical ways – in ways that speak of supreme refinement and ability. These Coyotes do not discriminate on landscapes where they roam: they float neatly from the mountainous caves of “When I Was in the Fire” to the soulful Harlem streets of “Rooftops”.

And now, only months into this new project and the Young Coyotes already have a booking agency, one for U.S. shows and another for International gigs. By the end of the year, their first full length will be complete (the track on this page is from that collection, and it this sample is unmastered). All this and the band isn’t even a year old.

While on tour with their previous bands, (Tipton with Moros Eros from Georgia; and Halferty with the Denver act The Axe That Chopped The Cherry Tree) the pair bonded. After the tour, each act disbanded and Tipton drove from Georgia to unite with Halferty (who also drums for Chain Gang of 1974), with the idea of a creating a new musical project. Just what, exactly, they were going to create was a matter of mystery.

Much like their arrangements, Tipton’s personal belongings were and still are, scarce. After their previous projects dissembled, Halferty and Tipton set-out to create an act that that could tour in a small car. When the Coyotes first began, Halfterty was using a suitcase a kick drum.

I believe that something about these boys spells: vagabond.

Are you sometimes presented with a vignette of some small act that you performed as a child and are struck with the overwhelming sensation of pleasure and perfection? To approach this in a more-simplistic manner: what was so magical about building mansions out of cardboard boxes, or playing with matchbox cars for hours on end?

Well, the Young Coyotes are moving backwards to those kinds of spaces, toward those kinds of answers. Or, they’re trying to anyway. If anything, their music does bear the fruit of retaining an adult version of childhood curiosity. In most instances, the Coyotes’ music flutters between the beautiful xylophone-induced vocal harmonies reminiscent of cradle songs and the scream of a thesis born from a lifetime of insomnia and bad dreams.

In all, the Coyotes songwriting process is hitting on this idea of childhood simplicity. They write quickly and they write often. Songs come with a rapidity that has had the three Coyotes (with the inclusion of Matt Wilcox on xylophone and drums) shaking their heads in delight.

Charles Bukowski talked about writing work that came screaming out of you, with little effort and a noted simplicity (“so you want to be a writer?”). If you’re producing work, Bukowski said, that comes out of you as though it had no choice – you’re probably doing the right thing. To extend the crayon picture, it’s as though you were a child with a drawer full of markers and a cardboard box that was about to become the largest mansion the world has ever seen. It is within this space where the Coyotes have struck it rich. But there are other caches of treasure littered all around their musical landscape.

It seems that the Coyotes songs have come like a case of insomnia – without warning. In talking about their songs, Tipton and Halferty rattle off several influences: creepy dreams, awkward silence, nostalgia. And certainly, somewhere in there, they are influenced by their diverging ideologies that, somehow, they leave off the table when there’s music between them. Music, for each of these complicated boys has been a refuge of sorts; a place to put that nervous energy and all those strange ideas and far-fetched dreams. And if the music isn’t that place, then they have found a rare safe haven in each other.

In-person, Tipton and Halferty possess the grace of authenticity and this new musical product is an example of that weight. Often, Tipton sings from his toes – bellowing beyond the microphone. Other times, he revolves around the microphone in some unconscious laundry-spin. Halferty, in sustaining the bands’ ever-changing beats, has no time to comb his hair behind the drums. Rightfully so, when you play this kind of honest, up-tempo, fierce and complicated work – there is very little time to look cool.

But in reality, the Young Coyotes are producing some of the coolest music in the Queen City these days. I can’t remember the last time that there was such a quick and pronounced buzz as there has been with a band in town, as there is with Coyotes. Look for the band’s upcoming full-length, which is – at this point – being eagerly anticipated by many. But really, you need get out to a show and see this unorthodox and beautiful caveman experiment thriving and turning whole rooms on their heads by going to their Myspace page: www.myspace.com/youngcoyotes.

This is certainly that kind of band in Denver where you most certainly will have the pleasure of saying, “I knew them when…”

By Jonathan Bitz

www.denversyntax.com

westword show review

Young Coyotes were definitely tighter than the recordings I'd heard online. A three-piece ensemble with two percussionists (one playing the bells) and a guitarist who did lead vocals, Coyotes’ set began with “When I Was in the Fire.” Before they started, the lead singer told us he was nervous. But it didn’t show, beyond the otherwise normal quaver to his singing. The dual rhythms created a compelling flow of sound, and it seemed to me as though there was some intentional distortion on the vocals in various songs. We were told that “A Thousand Masks” was an old song, but admitted that the band was really only around four months old, so how old could it be?

The band closed with “Momentary Drowning.” I was struck by how, yes, the songs were clearly tightly structured, but each member had enough leeway within that structure to move and change things ever so slightly so the performances were less likely to become stale for the band -- and its audience.

by tom murphy

thanks, tom!

colorado music buzz. buzz. buzz.

Young Coyotes
by Heather Browne
There's a propulsive, raw, melodic sound coming from the streets of Denver these days from one band of Young Coyotes. This trio is only a few months into their existence as a musical entity, but are making addictively good indie-pop music in the vein of the Shins or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, with some hints of Arcade Fire. The Young Coyotes make blood pulse hot, with their chiming harmonic guitar tones, thumping percussion and strong shout-out-loud vocals. After turning in one of the strongest performances of the Denver Post's Underground Music Showcase in early August, a steady buzz has been building behind this band of fresh-faced twenty-somethings. Earlier this year, frontman Zach Tipton moved back to Denver from Georgia after the demise of his other band, Moros Eros. Zach had toured with percussionist Adam Halfterty while Adam was in his previous band The Axe That Chopped The Cherry Tree, and the two knew they shared a strong musical affinity. After adding percussionist/glockenspieler Matt Wilcox to the lineup, the Young Coyotes were born - and have been turning out songs that stick in your head and ebb with authenticity ever since. In addition to shows during the DNC and all through the closing of summer, you can catch their hotly-tipped set at the Monolith Festival VIP opening party on September 12. A listen through their demos on MySpace (album forthcoming) just might be the best thing about your day today: "Momentary Drowning" is ready to soundtrack an entire summer's worth of campfires and dives off the pier, while "When I Was In The Fire" rewards your patience when it explodes into a cascade of radiantly shimmering harmonies and urgent sentiments in the last seconds of the song. Young Coyotes play earnestly and with joyful ambition, and that's something that will always be worth hearing.

woohoo!

~zach

Momentary Drowning LIVE

i found this video on YouTube today when i was wondering if anyone has ever filmed us. turns out someone did. john (youtube it), abe vigoda, and the dirty projectors. tomorrow is our last day of recording and we should have half the record done by tomorrow night. we might release it ourselves it no one is interested. we also have some shows coming up...check the space for details.

i really would like to see the movie happiness. someone help me out. i can't find it been listening to this track (Momentary Drowning) from this young band from Denver for a few weeks now. They bring to mind Bishop Allen with their use of hand claps, melody and integration of several interesting instruments. The passion in the vocals definitely brings to mind some of that white boy soul that Cold War Kids possess. They are definitely crafting their own sound and we can't wait to hear more."

~indiemusicfilter.com ~Featured song ~ "For fans of the hand clappy indie-pop Bishop Allen, Beirut or Oh No, Oh My!, check out Young Coyotes. dot" (a reference to pete and pete...yet slighty more melancholy), but i haven't made any final decisions yet.

we are going to write as much as possible until we work out something with a you-know-what, because we would like to see these recording in stores and online, with a budget slightly more than we have to work with currently, which is on the level of asking favors.

i hope you guys understand and don't call us sell outs. please don't call us sell outs. if you listen to the music, you can tell that we are quite sensitive. that, or really really high. type='text'>nighttime lyrics.

so, it's almost four in the morning. i've stayed up this late because i want nocturnally inclined lyrics, therefore i'm only writing at night. does that make any sense? anyways, i believe i'm going to our friend matt's house in colorado springs this sunday to fix up some guitars, add some fun things to the mix, and finally record my vocals for the songs we have drums for (or more if we're lucky). i completed the lyrics for three out of the four songs, with the final song only having a chorus at the moment. the names of the songs are as follows:

"momentary drowning"

"when i was in the fire"

"a thousand masks"

the last one is still being bounced around in my head for a little longer.

the songs should be up early next week.

bedtime.

<br
